Research Into Similar Products: Representation in R&B

Gender is regularly represented in R&B music videos. Both genres are represented in completely different ways, and that representation is seen in many R&B music videos. Objectification of women is a common video shown in R&B music videos, as are seen as objects not seen as human. Men are also classed as objects but less regularly as the ‘female gaze’ is a term that came around to accommodate to the idea that females also enjoy sexualising men.

Class is represented over and over again through similar actions and props – Youth and wealth are represented in R&B music videos. Characters in R&b wear gold chains and are shown in the center of the frame to show upper class and superiority. 

Ethnicity – Stereotypically African American rappers are portrayed as wealthy and also drug dealers which is a common idea that is glorified in R&B music videos. With the current rise and popularity in Urban and R&B music racism is no longer an issue yet people can argue this. Black and white artists work together creating more money for the music industry.
